Antigone tells the story of a young woman who defies the king’s edict in the aftermath of a civil war. Antigone’s brothers, Eteocles and Polyneices, have killed each other in battle. Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, honors Eteocles but forbids the burial of Polyneices, branding him a traitor. Antigone, guided by familial loyalty and divine law, secretly buries her brother and is arrested. Despite pleas from her sister Ismene and her fiancé Haemon, Creon refuses to relent. The prophet Teiresias warns of divine retribution, prompting Creon to reverse his decision—but too late. Sophocles’ tragedy edited by Chase Leone, Katie Leone, and Jess Robertson explores the conflict between individual conscience and state authority, and the devastating cost of pride.
