2025 Deem Distinguished Lecture: Devan Shimoyama
Devan Shimoyama is a contemporary African American mixed-media painter inspired by Black, queer, and male bodies. Shimoyama explores themes of mythology and folklore, using his artwork to examine the intersections of race, class, gender, and sexuality within everyday life.
To honor 30 years of the Deem Distinguished Lecture Series, the Art Museum of WVU will present an exhibition of works by many of the Deem featured artists, including one of Shimoyama’s paintings. Funded by Patrick and Alison Deem, the annual event provides students, faculty and community members access to thought provoking examples of contemporary art.
