About This Event

West Virginia University School of Public Health and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health continue their Rural Health Initiative series with the Rural Health Convos: Social Prescriptions virtual discussion. ‌‌The goal of these sessions is to highlight important topical areas of overlap and opportunity in support of a recently announced research partnership between the Schools to advance joint solutions for shared challenges. All levels of experience and interest in rural health research are welcome.

Join the next session on Monday, July 20, 2026, at noon via Zoom, to explore the topic of social prescriptions. Sometimes medical care isn’t enough. In these cases, "social prescribing" can act as a bridge, connecting people to the healthcare they need. These prescriptions are referrals and services necessary for day-to-day health, such as public transportation cards, fresh food delivery and access, and translation services. In rural areas, these interventions can be the determining factor in a patient’s access to life-saving healthcare.

‌WVU School of Public Health adjunct faculty member Brianna Sheppard, director, West Virginia Area Health Education Centers, and alum Corey Edmonds, manager of business development and community relations, Mount Laurel Medical Center, joined by Renee Johnson, mental health professor, will gather to remark on their experiences working with social prescriptions in rural areas.
